ATBC – Asia Pacific Chapter Annual Meeting 2011
The biodiversity crisis in tropical Asia

The 2011 Annual Meeting of the ATBC Asia-Pacific Chapter was held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 12-15th March. It has been organized by the Conservation Ecology Program at King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi, and Prince of Songkla University, and was sponsored by WCS Thailand, and followed successful earlier meetings of the Chapter in Mahabalipuram, India, in 2007, Kuching, Malaysia, in 2008, Chiang Mai, Thailand, in 2009, and Bali, Indonesia (with the main ATBC meeting), in 2010. The conference brought together researchers, practitioners, and students from around the Asia-Pacific region under the overall them of ‘The Biodiversity Crisis in Tropical Asia’.
Participants
- The 60 oral presentations included speakers from Australia, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam, as well as researchers from outside the region.
Highlights of the 2011 program included presentations on :
- the ecology of the enigmatic khan you (Laonastes) in Laos;
- the impacts of the 2008 ice-storm in the Nanling Mountains of southern China;
- the effects of peat-swamp degradation in Borneo on the bird fauna;
- the use of direct-seeding to establish new forests in southern Thailand; and
- ways of evaluating the effectiveness of conservation outreach activities.
There were specialized sessions on mammalian carnivores, bats, pheasants, plant-animal interactions, threats, and policy, among other topics. With some sessions spanning the region from Queensland to Yunnan, these meetings plaid an essential role in a part of the world that is united by biology, but divided by history.
- For graduate students, in particular, it was often the only opportunity they have to interact with researchers from other countries who are working on similar problems.

Assessing and Restoring Biodiversity in a Human Dominated Landscape
One hundred and 43 people, from over 20 countries, attended the third meeting of the ATBC Asia-Pacific chapter from 12-15 Feb 2009 in Chiang Mai. This total includes eight Thai students funded by the Biodiversity Research Council (Thailand) and eleven students from elsewhere in the region funded by the ATBC Asia-Pacific chapter. Over the course of the conference over 90 oral presentations and 18 posters were given.
The conference was extremely well organised and we would like to thank Dr George Gale, Dr Tommaso Savini and the students from King Mongutt's University of Technology Thronburi Thailand for their efforts.
Immediately after the conference, Scientific Paper Writing and Experimental Design and Data Analysis courses were hosted by King Mongutt's University of Thronburi Thailand. This is the second time the chapter has held these courses and we intend to continue the tradition at next year's ATBC meeting in Bali. Thanks go to the course resource staff, in particular Dr Jason Tylianakis, for volunteering their time to teach and to KMUTT for supporting the courses.
- Madav Gadgil Prize for Best Student Oral Presentation was awarded to Umesh Srinivasan for his presentation on "Nuclearity and inter-species association in mixed-species bird flocks"
- A runner-up prize for Best Student Oral Presentation was awarded to Nandini Velho for her paper on "Differential effects of rodents on survival and spatial dispersion of six hornbill dispersed species"
- The Peter Ashton Prize for Best Student Poster was awarded to Yong-Jiang Zhang for his poster on "Assessing chilling resistance of tropical plants"

Towards sustainable land-use in the tropical Asia-Pacific region
The ATBC Asia-Pacific chapter held a successful second annual meeting at Kuching, Sarawak in 23rd-26th April 2008 under the theme of sustainable land-use in the region. Approximately 200 participants attended the meeting and gave approximately 130 oral presentations and 45 posters. The meeting was hosted by the Sarawak Forestry Corporation and held in association with the Japanese Society for Tropical Ecology.
Two workshops on ‘Scientific presentations' and ‘Experimental design and statistics', were held immediately after the conference.
- Dr Jason Tylianakis generously gave his time to teach these workshops and they were attended by 22 participants, most of whom were sponsored by the conference.
- Madav Gadgil Prize for best student oral presentation was awarded to Yoshiko Yazawa for her presentation on "Differentiation in crown architecture among 200 tree species in a lowland rainforest, Peninsula Malaysia".
- The Peter S. Ashton Prize for best student poster was awarded to Franky Zamzani for his poster on "Deforestation process and land-use changes within PA's: A case study in Gunung Palung National Park, West Kalimantan, Indonesia".

Averting biodiversity meltdown in the Asian tropics
Thanks largely to the efforts of Dr Priya Davidar and her team of assistants, the Asia-Pacific chapter held a very successful inaugural conference, attended by over 120 participants from 16 countries, at Mahabalipuram, India (6th-8th March 2007). Dr Madav Gadgil and Dr Peter Ashton, were the chief guests, and gave fascinating keynote addresses, while over the three days 68 oral papers and 25 posters were presented.
Participants were also able to enjoy the ancient temples and rock carvings for which Mahabalipuram is famous, and the French Institute of Pondicherry, who co-sponsored the meeting, arranged a excursion to the nearby Dry evergreen forests and their institute.
We would like to thank the French Institute of Pondicherry and our other sponsors, including ATREE, Ford Foundation India, Indo-US Science & Technology Forum, Wildlife Conservation Society India, Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, and ATBC.
It was decided at the meeting to create two prizes in honour of our chief guests, The Madav Gadgil Prize for best student oral presentation, and The Peter S. Ashton Prize for best student poster.
- Joint winners of the Madav Gadgil Prize were Hari Sridhar for his presentation on bird flocks in the Western Ghats, and Mary Rose C. Posa for her paper on conservation in the Philippines.
- Barath Sundaram was awarded the Peter S. Ashton Prize for his poster on the effects of fire and grazing.
